KUCHING – A father and daughter, the first batch of chemical engineering students and the inaugural cohort of civil servants who had completed a postgraduate program were among more than 550 who were awarded scrolls at the graduation ceremony of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on 25 October.
Lecturer from the Faculty of Business and Design, Ong Liap Teck, 61, was awarded a PhD for his thesis on “Experiencing a re-entry: second career academics in business schools in Malaysia”.
Ong was among seven others who were awarded doctorates.
His daughter, Shien Ping, 22, received her bachelor degree in biotechnology. The valedictorian was also awarded the Anugerah Graduan Cemerlang Yayasan Sarawak (Yayasan Sarawak Excellent Graduate Award).
The university’s first batch of six chemical engineering graduates – Jolene Tan Hui Hoon, Chang Ke Xin, Yeo Tze Hui, Luke Ngu Wei Wei, Amy Yeo Wun Tin and Joanne Ling Yi Wen – received their scrolls from Swinburne Chancellor Graham Goldsmith.
The graduates at today’s ceremony included those from Malaysia and 30 countries who had completed their courses in diploma, and bachelor and masters degrees in the field of business, computing, design, engineering, and science.
Also graduating were 16 of the 20 Sarawak civil servants who had completed the Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) program. Four had graduated at Swinburne’s graduation ceremony in Melbourne, Australia, last month.
They were the inaugural cohort of the human resource program developed by Swinburne Sarawak in collaboration with the Leadership Institute of Sarawak Civil Service, formerly known as the Centre for Modern Management Kuching.
The second cohort of students of the now updated MHRM course had begun their studies in April this year.
In the industry awards category, biotechnology graduate Nur Diyana Binti Musa was awarded the Anugerah Galakan Bumiputera Yayasan Sarawak, while CPA Australia presented Tai Shao Ran with its Book Prize Award.
Crowe Horwath’s best graduate award went to accounting and finance graduate Stella Vong Wei Jing while the Ernst & Young presented its award to accounting graduate Edric Ting Wei Hang.
Kog Hie Ming, Karen Wong En Pei and Wang Yong Sheng were the ACCA Academic Excellence In Auditing award winners.
The recipient for KPMG’s Academic Excellence in Taxation award was Wong Chung Seng.
Naim Holding Berhad’s best graduate for civil engineering was Adeline Tan Jia Jia, while Pansar’s award for the best marketing graduate was Adrene Tan Howe Chiatt.
Computer science graduate Abeer Abdul Rasool Ali Al Raisi won the SAINS’ best graduate award while the company’s best ICT graduate award was presented to Chua Lee Ching.
Sarawak Energy awarded Matthew Chai Min Enn who graduated with honours in electrical and electronic engineering while graphic design graduate Tok Lee Ying took Wisma Printing Sdn Bhd’s award for best graduate.
