KUCHING – Students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus have been awarded 92 scholarships with a total value of over RM185,000 this semester. The scholarship awards are granted to outstanding students who scored impressive results in public and semester exams as a way for Swinburne Sarawak to recognize and encourage academic excellence.
The scholarships, categorised as Entrance, Leadership and Merit, were presented to the students by Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, the pro vice-chancellor and chief executive of Swinburne Sarawak.
A total of 36 students who had recently enrolled for foundation and undergraduate courses were awarded the Entrance scholarships.
This category of scholarship is specially given to those with outstanding academic achievement in SPM and STPM.
Of the total number who was awarded this category of scholarship, the recipients also comprised international students from Indonesia, Myanmar, Kenya, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Five new students, formerly from SMK St Joseph, SMK Batu Lintang, SMK Green Road in Kuching, SMK St Columba in Miri and SMK Tung Hua in Sibu who had achieved good results and had been actively involved in extra-curricular activities while in secondary school, were presented with Leadership scholarships.
Meanwhile, 51 students who are pursuing various undergraduate programs were awarded the Merit scholarships for achieving high distinctions and distinctions at their recent semester exams.
At the ceremony, Lau Siew Kong, a first-year student pursuing Diploma of Electronic Engineering, was the sole recipient the Daiken Scholarship award worth RM11,000 per academic year.
Sets up by the Japanese company Daiken Scholarship and administered by the Sarawak Timber Association, the Daiken Scholarship fund was awarded to Sarawakians to pursue their studies in forestry and timber related courses.
Apart from Daiken scholarship, 18 students of Swinburne Sarawak are also awarded JPA and Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarships.
Among those present at the ceremony were Mr. Anthony Chin, Senior Manager of Daiken Sarawak Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Lee Hua Seng, Chief Executive Offer of Sarawak Timber Association, parents and families of the scholarship recipients as well as the heads of schools and departments of Swinburne Sarawak.
This is the second time this year Swinburne Sarawak has awarded its top students with scholarships.
