FYP Showcase Innovative Projects that Align with Swinburne’s Moonshots

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science (FECS) unveiled the innovative works of its final-year students at the recently concluded Final Year Project (FYP) Showcase. The event, held on 28 May, featured a dynamic array of year-long projects, an industry award ceremony and a networking session, marking another milestone for the university.

The bi-annual showcase commenced with an inspiring Opening Address by Ir Professor Su Hieng Tiong, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science. Prof. Su welcomed over 200 attendees, including the 28 esteemed industry guests. The event also recognised the generous support of its sponsors – Group Engineers Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Sunvision Engineering Sdn Bhd and The James Dyson Foundation.

The day started with insightful keynote sessions, commencing with ‘Cloud Computing and Growing Greener – Cultivating Talent for Sustainable Energy Solutions’ by Mdm Wan Balkis Binti Wan Mohd Shuhaimi and Mr Abang Mohd Arif Anaqi bin Abang Isa, from Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS). This was followed by a session on ‘Charting Your Path to Success: Exploring Advanced Degrees in Engineering, Computing and Science’ delivered by three of Swinburne Sarawak’s distinguished alumni: Dr Alfred Tan Jia Yee, Dr Jasman Chai Yi Hao, and Dr Karen Kong Gah Hie.

A total of 121 projects from various disciplines including engineering, computing and science, were presented through oral sessions. The event’s highlight was the Plenary Session by Chen Tzy Wen, Managing Director, Sunvision Engineering Sdn Bhd. He also presented the industry awards to Perry Yang Tchie Hunn, Sze Xijie, and Ong Yu Xhin, who were recognized for the Most Innovative, Most Practical, and Best Implemented Projects, respectively.

According to Chen, “University final-year projects are not just academic endeavours; they’re testaments to creativity, innovation, and the relentless pursuits of knowledge.” He shared that it was inspiring to witness the passion and dedication of these students during their showcase.

The event was also abuzz with networking opportunities, where students engaged with industry leaders to discuss potential employment and collaborative ventures. The industry feedback was invaluable, providing motivation and direction for the next generation of engineers, scientists and technologists.

Ir Professor Su emphasises that this day is for final-year students to celebrate their achievements. “Through the showcases, they demonstrate their creativity, problem-solving skills, and innovative ideas.” He also highlighted that Swinburne Sarawak welcomes the support and participation of industries.

“Their feedback and comments during this showcase provide valuable, real-world perspectives that the students will find immensely useful,” he added.

Swinburne Saarwak’s final year project showcase aligns with the university’s 2025 strategic plan with its vision to bring people and technology together to build a better world. The bi-annual FYP Showcase gives students real-world industry experience, fosters lifelong learning, and facilitates partnerships with industry experts. These collaborations have significantly contributed to making Swinburne a hub for industry engagement, in Malaysia and globally.
