KUCHING – The upcoming Good Design Week (GDW 2019) event will bring together the best industry experts, academic, researchers and brightest design students from Swinburne University and Curtin University to share the good design experience in industry, academia, and education.

Happening from 14 to 17 July 2019 at Swinburne’s Sarawak campus, the event is jointly organised by the Australian universities. Chief Minister of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is the Guest of Honour of GDW 2019.

The objectives of GDW 2019 are to bring applied design research, practice, governance and scholarship to examine good design for the community, housing, culture, heritage, resources, eco-tourism, filming and gaming, and creative economy. Participants will get to work with industry and also local government, as well as design firms from Vietnam and Singapore.

Kuching city was chosen as it offers a fantastic context to explore design through shared practice, research, education and scholarship.

The imbalance gap of economic, social, cultural and environment elements has increasingly widened, resulting in global communities having to face a wide range of challenges such as isolation, poverty, cultural loss and limited access to technology. Therefore, there is a need to observe the liveability and affordance of the places we live, work and play, including how we make use of digital technology to enhance and preserve our culture, heritage and traditions.

On the first and second day of GDW 2019, there will be a Good Design Symposium involving industry experts and academicians. It will cover activities such as keynote addresses and plenary sessions by government and industry experts; interactions, discussion and review of student exhibition; launching of the 48hr Design JAM (university students) and 24hr Design JAM (high school students); and round table session with the industry and academic.

The 24hr Design JAM will involve the participation of high school students from Kuching division with the theme ‘Knowledge transfer through digitalisation’. As part of the programme, the participants are also required to come up with a logo design for the 20th anniversary celebration of Swinburne Sarawak in Malaysia. The 48hr Design JAM on the other hand, consist of Curtin students from the Perth campus who will work on projects focusing on localisation and awakening design for Sarawak.

Key features of the exhibition will be the students’ digital and creative works; Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) showcase; as well as sponsors’ booths.

The organising committee is also inviting interested parties to come on board as event sponsors. The event will provide wide exposure to their products and services, in addition to expanding their business network.
