Leadership training for Swinburne Sarawak’s student council

KUCHING – Ten Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students spent two days at a leadership camp at Permai Rainforest Resort, recently.

The students, who were recently elected to the university’s student council, learned how to transform values into actions, vision into reality, overcome obstacles, and work with and through others to turn challenging opportunities into successes.

Members of the Swinburne Sarawak Student Council (SSSC) serve a one-year term and during that time are responsible for looking into the interests of fellow students. This includes helping new students adjust to life on campus, jointly organising orientation with university staff for newly-enrolled students and other events that benefit students.

At the training camp they were put through their paces by Mark Ferguson, a training consultant with more than 20 years in human resource development in industries such as hotel, banking, oil and gas as well as education.

The students were tested on and learned to hone their leadership skills as well as creativity through games, role-plays and experiential indoor and outdoor activities.

“Through these activities, they have an understanding of the specific skills, concepts and factors that make up a successful leader. These help them improve their interpersonal skills, sense of creativity and self-confidence,” said Mohamed Hisyam Jamal Mohd, Assistant Manager for Client Services of Swinburne Sarawak’s Student Operations Unit.

“As members of the SSSC they need to be up to the mark when discharging their responsibilities. The expectation by their peers and university to do well is quite high,” he said.

“I’m happy to see that at the end of the program they have a sense of camaraderie and are excited to get on with the job at SSSC. So, I’m certain that they will put in their best.”
