KUCHING – Scholarships and industry awards from LONGI Technology (Kuching) Sdn Bhd could be available to Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students following the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Under the arrangement, LONGI Technology, a manufacturing facility of LONGI Solar Technology Co Ltd, China, will look into offering scholarships and industry awards to deserving Swinburne students and graduates.
The collaboration with the solar cell manufacturer also offers Swinburne students an additional avenue for internship to obtain industry experience in preparation for their career. This arrangement works well for the company in Kuching Sama Jaya High Tech Park as it hopes to engage more Swinburne students for research projects in solar technology, amongst others.
A career with LONGI Technology could be a reality for Swinburne graduates as the company hopes to fill positions in business, mechanical engineering, robotics and mechatronics engineering, as well as electrical and electronic engineering roles in the next two years. Swinburne will look into facilitating connections between its alumni and LONGI Technology for its human resource needs.
Currently, the company has about 1900 employees with Swinburne graduates holding senior and executive positions.
LONGI Technology will also have the opportunity to offer industry feedback and input via its involvement on the university’s program advisory panel. This helps to ensure programs remain relevant and up-to-date with industry needs.
Already being planned between the university’s Centre for Digital Futures and LONGI Technology are R&D projects, another area both organizations have agreed to explore.
“We have a collaboration project involving a Swinburne master student and our Cell Process team in mid-August. This is our first collaboration with Swinburne and the project will be carried out at our Cell Plant 3 at LONGi Technology for tentatively three months. We hope to have more collaborative projects with Swinburne,” said LONGI Technology CEO Mr Ngieng Sii Jing.
Also covered in the MoU is the staff developmental needs of LONGI Technology. The company hopes to offer short courses and training programs for its employees and both will work together to develop and conduct the programs. Apart from postgraduate programs, the Australian university branch campus also offers short courses that may be tailored to the needs of industry.
In addition, STEM outreach and corporate social responsibility projects (CSR) are another area they will jointly explore. The university conducts a series of STEM and CSR activities with schools within and outside the Kuching city area.
Signatories to the MoU were LONGI Technology CEO Mr Ngieng Sii Jing and Swinburne Sarawak Deputy Vice-Chancellor and CEO Professor John Wilson, who has since retired.
