KUCHING – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, Sarawak Branch (IEM Sarawak Branch) has paved the way for collaborative relations between the two parties in areas such as industry-related research, engineering training and knowledge sharing.
Signing on behalf of Swinburne Sarawak was its Deputy Head of School of Engineering Dr Chua Hong Siang who represented the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Professor John Wilson, while Chairman of IEM Sarawak Ir. Haidel Heli signed on behalf of the Institution. Also present to witness the signing was Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak and Minister for Infrastructure Development and Transportation Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing.
The signing ceremony was held in conjunction with the Institution’s annual dinner which carried the ‘FIFA World Cup’ theme.
The MoU outlines the collaboration between the university and the institution to further drive the advancement of the science of engineering in Sarawak. As the only international branch campus of Swinburne University in Australia and one of the leaders in engineering education and research in the state, Swinburne Sarawak is confident that the partnership will mutually benefit both parties.
With its expertise in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the recent establishment of the myBIM satellite centre at the campus, Swinburne Sarawak will also be leading the implementation of BIM in the upcoming IEM Sarawak Branch’s International Engineering Centre (IntEC) development project, which is set to be the first fully integrated BIM project in Sarawak.
Swinburne Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science offers a standard four-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees with integrated honours year, covering disciplines such as civil, chemical, mechanical, electrical and electronic, and robotics and mechatronics. Students who are keen in broadening their study experience can opt to pursue double degrees in civil/business, mechanical/business or robotics and mechatronics/computer science.
All engineering degrees at Swinburne Sarawak are recognised by professional engineering bodies such as Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Engineers Australia and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), ensuring the courses are carefully monitored for their academic quality, career relevance, and compliance with Malaysian and Australian qualifications standards.
The university’s long-standing engagement with industry partners assured students are exposed to real-world experiential learning, in addition to providing them the platforms to leverage on research expertise and facilities. Encouraging research culture among academic staff and students alike is very much a key element of the Faculty where its academic staff work closely with industry partners to develop programmes and activities that are geared towards research translation and commercialisation.
