Swinburne Sarawak donates to Japan’s earthquake victims

KUCHING –Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently donated RM3,000 to Japan’s earthquake and tsunami victims.

Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief executive of Swinburne Sarawak, handed over the cheque to Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sarawak Branch volunteer Jacqueline Lum at the university.

The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sarawak Branch is currently collecting donations which will be channelled to the organisation’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Fund.

“We have received many offers from organisations, institutions and private individuals to help collect donations from the public for this effort. We encourage all parties wishing to assist in any form to contact us so that we can work together,” Lum said.

The MRCS Sarawak Branch will be receiving donations in both cash and kind until the end of June, she said.

Melissa Ramanair, advisor for Swinburne Sarawak’s Malaysian Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment 72, said the recent donation was collected from staff and students during a campus-wide donation drive over two weeks.

“We hope that this small contribution from us will in some way help to rebuild the lives and communities of those affected by the earthquake,” she said.

Also present to witness the handing over of the donation was James Ho, Manager of Business Development and Communications Department, Hussain Taiban, Registrar and Director, members of MRCS Sarawak Branch and Swinburne Sarawak’s Malaysian Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment 72.

Those wishing to make a contribution may contact the MRCS Sarawak Branch at 082 – 428 228 or visit its office at Jalan P. Ramlee in Kuching.

Alternatively, cheques may be made out to “Malaysian Red Crescent Society”, with “Japan Earthquake and Tsunami” written on the back, and sent to MRCS Sarawak Branch.
