KUCHING – For raising more than RM8,000 in aid of children with cancer, the Rotaract Club of Swinburne Sarawak was recently presented with the Rotary District 3310 District Awards 2014-2015 Best Rotaract Club Project – The Gold Award for the project.
The club collected the amount for the 2014 Go Bald community project of the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society.
The award was presented by its parent club, the Rotary Club of Kuching Central.
“The award is dedicated to all the actively involved members of the Rotaract club, for sacrificing their time and making the effort to raise the funds. It was our biggest community project and it was a huge success,” said its president, Marlon Perera.
He expressed appreciation to the parent club which he said has supported and sponsored the students throughout the years.
“They are very proud of our past projects and achievements,” said Perera.
The 150-member club at the university plans to raise funds for the project annually.
The Rotaract Club of Swinburne Sarawak also managed to collect a total of RM12,344, far exceeding its original target of RM8,000 for the 2015 Go Bald community project.
Perera said the current parent club president, Louis Yong, single-handedly raised RM4,000 for the 2015 Go Bald project.
Other projects the club has undertaken to raise funds for the 2014-2015 period include a movie marathon, Scavenger Hunt and the Swinburne Student Carnival which was held in March this year.
Perera urged students to join the university’s Rotaract Club as “it provides them with the opportunity to develop themselves as future leaders as well as realizing their roles as responsible citizens”.
“As the advisor, I am immensely proud of how far the club has grown in terms of members, and the scale of their projects. The committee has done an excellent job in leading the club and everyone is very proactive,” said lecturer Andrea Chan from the Faculty of Language and Communications.
“The members have contributed ideas and manpower while our parent club has also been incredibly supportive in all our projects and provided valuable guidance. I wish the club continued successes in the future,” she added.
