Swinburne Sarawak wins Freescale intelligent car racing competition

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus won the first and second place in the Freescale Cup 2012 Intelligent Car Racing competition which was held at Universiti Teknologi MARA in Shah Alam, recently.

The university’s two teams beat 32 others from 20 private and public universities to take home a total of RM8,500 in cash prizes, trophies and certificates.

Swinburne Sarawak’s Team 2, made up of second-year engineering students William Zon Kok Weng, Ivan Ling Ting Yang and Ludovic Lan Yan On, took the championship title and a cash prize of RM5,000, a trophy, medals and certificate.

The university’s Team 1 was named first runner-up, winning the prize money of RM3,000. The team which consisted of Mark Tee Kit Tsun and Carmelia Sim Lee Yoong, also bagged an additional RM500 for achieving the fastest time in the competition.

Team advisors for the two teams were brothers Riady Siswoyo Jo (Team 2) and Hudyjaya Siswoyo Jo (Team 1).

Monash University Malaysia was second runner-up in the national competition.

The teams were judged on completion time for the race (60%); safety and quality (25%); tracking system (ability to follow track line); acceleration, speed control at turning and smoothness of model car movement; and cost, innovation/creativity (15%).

Freescale is a US manufacturer of microcontrollers, microprocessors and semiconductors, specializing in smart vehicle control system. This event was organized to promote the application of advanced embedded system in automobile control.

The Freescale Cup is a global competition where student teams build, program, and race a model car around a track for speed. The fastest car to complete the track without derailing, wins.

The development of the race car requires a strong knowledge in robotics and mechatronics engineering which involves mechanical and electronics design as well as image processing and embedded system implementation. Each team was provided with a standard entry kit from Freescale. The supporting hardware and software has to be developed to propel and steer the intelligent car through the race course by following the guide lines.

This is the second year Swinburne Sarawak took part in the competition. In its first attempt in the competition last year, the university took first and second runners-up in the competition.
