KUCHING – Swinburne Sarawak’s Centre for Digital Futures will host a workshop on the applications of Internet of Things (IoT) for government officials on 7 February 2018, from 9.00am to 12 noon at Swinburne’s Sarawak campus.
The workshop, jointly organised by Swinburne and University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour in France, is expected to be attended by government officials involved in the fields of smart farming and smart cities.
It will be facilitated by Professor Congduc Pham, a professor at the University of Pau in the LIUPPA (Computer Science Laboratory of the University of Pau and Pays De l’adour) laboratory, and Professor Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Professor and Director of Key Lab for IoT from the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology, Swinburne University of Technology.
Professor Dimitrios will touch on topics such as ‘What IoT and industrial IoT are, and the potential impact of this technology in many application areas and the world economy’, ‘Key research and innovation challenges that need to be solved, the current state of the art, and our capabilities’, and ‘Industry IoT-based projects that utilise novel IoT solutions and quantify their actual/expected impact’.
Meanwhile, Professor Pham will elaborate on his European Union H2020 WAZIUP (Open Innovation Platform for IoT-Big Data) project focusing on deploying low-cost IoT, as well as talk about his research and development experience in IoT.
According to Director of Centre for Digital Futures Associate Professor Patrick Then, all three universities have existing collaborative efforts and share expertise in the fields of smart farming and smart cities.
“In this workshop, we will engage with various government agencies so we can share our expertise and gather feedback from them, particularly to understand the challenges they face in smart farming and smart cities, and ultimately providing them with a framework for solution development to support the states Digital Economy vision,” said Associate Professor Then.
Furthermore, the workshop will also focus on successful projects which members of the team have worked on, for example, the city of Santander located in the north coast of Spain. Santander is hailed as the global pioneering smart city, and described as a city-scale experimental research facility in support of typical applications and services for a smart city.
