Daniel Tan obtained both his degree in veterinary medicine and PhD at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), a prominent university in Malaysia known for research in agriculture and biotechnology. His PhD project was about molecular biology of shrimp white spot syndrome virus. While in the university, he had involved in developing a PCR-based diagnostic kit which won multiple awards including Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2000), Salon International des Inventions de Genève (2001) and International Invention and New Products Exposition (INPEX 2002). After returning to home state Sarawak, he worked for Sarawak Biodiversity Centre for about seven years, helping to establish the microbiology labs for research on antibiotic producing microorganisms. Currently, he continues his research on microorganisms at Swinburne University, focusing on biomass composting and biofertiliser development in the field of agriculture and forestry. His other research interests include plant tissue culture and animal nutrition. His has active collaborations and engagement with governmental agencies as well as the industry, including Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (STROPI), Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Sarawak Timber Association (STA), TKK Agriculture Development Sdn Bhd, Satoyama Farm Sdn Bhd, Agroz Group and Biotechnology Diversified Industry Sdn Bhd.
