The Student Final Year Research Project Conference started in year 2015. Due to the changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held virtually for the second time since last year. For this year, it was held on 3 June 2021. The virtual conference was an exciting showcase of the final year students’ year-long research projects, which are essential for their professional career preparation.
The conference started at 9:15am via Microsoft Teams with the opening address by Professor Su Hieng Tiong, the Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science (FECS), Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. The event continued with the Information Sharing Session by ICATS University College on the topic of “Expert Craftsman Mechatronics & Integrated IoT & Cybersecurity in Manufacturing Programme” before the commencement of the students’ oral presentations and showcase of their projects.
A total of 92 individual student projects were presented from different disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Robotic and Mechatronics Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Science (Biotechnology). Industrial guests from across West Malaysia, East Malaysia, and Australia were invited to the students’ presentations. There were 23 representatives from local companies such as Cahya Mata Sarawak, Maltimur Resource Sdn.Bhd, X-FAB Sarawak Sdn. Bhd, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Epsilon Jurutera Perunding Sarawak Sdn. Bhd., Sarahill Consultant Sdn. Bhd., Taiyo Yuden, Public Works Department, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, IME Technology, ICATS University College, GTG Green Technologies Sdn. Bhd. (Selangor), James Dyson Foundations (Johor) and Swinburne University of Technology Australia, Hawthorne campus, was among those who attended the conference. In total, more than 230 Swinburne Sarawak students, staff and industrial guests attended this virtual conference across multiple parallel presentation sessions by various disciplines.
The presence of industry representatives and their feedback on the students’ projects provided insights and served as a motivation to the aspiring engineers who are about to embark upon their professional careers.
This semester, Swinburne Sarawak collaborated with ICATS University College in sharing the information to our final year students on the topic of “Expert Craftsman Mechatronics & Integrated IoT & Cybersecurity in Manufacturing Programme”. The speaker, Adrian Hon, the Manager (Corporate Training) shared with our students, a great opportunity for them to get a fully funded hands-on certification on Expert Craftsman Mechatronics Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Expert Craftsman Mechatronics PLC Technology and Integrated IoT & Cybersecurity in Manufacturing after they have completed their degree course.
The Final Year Research Project (FYRP) conference is usually held in the final week of a semester, twice a year. The event provides an opportunity for the university to explore further collaboration and strengthen ties with industry partners.
