You will team up with other students to work on a real project brief presented by one of our industry partners. They will work closely with you, providing advice, support, feedback, and assessment. And, the best bit, if the solution meets their needs, they will use it.
Capstones are final-year projects (“FYP”) that provide students with a professionally focused learning experience which allows them to put learnt theory into practice.
Features of Capstones
- Students are set a major task to complete over one unit of study. They will work in teams and projects may be discipline-specific, multi-disciplinary and/or inter-Faculty based
- Projects utilise authentic real-world challenges which may be externally sourced from industry and the community, may take the form of a competition, a research-based project, or an internally developed project brief
- All projects are open-structured, real-world focused, and feature authentic professional activities and challenges
- Throughout the project, students apply the broad range of knowledge and skills that they have acquired through their studies in order to complete the tasks Through the experience, students also develop the range of skills and attitudes required of professionals in the workplace, and become self-directed learners, independently seeking resources, peer and professional assistance as needed
- Depending on the discipline and project topic, students may be provided with access to specific facilities (e.g., labs, studios), may be required to work directly within an industry context, or may need to work in their own time and choice of location
- Each student is encouraged to identify their personal strengths, develop project management, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, in order to succeed in their real-world project
Business Capstone Units
For example, BUS30031 Sustainable Business Practice is the first of the two mandatory capstone units of the Bachelor of Business. It is the pre-requisite unit for BUS30032 Business Consulting Project, another final year capstone. This unit aims for students to use a range of models and frameworks to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing organisations’ triple bottom line, that is, people, planet, and profit.
BUS30009 Industry Consulting Project aims to provide students with the experience and skills to work on a real-world problem-solving project of our industry partners by building on Design Thinking, experiential learning, and management consulting principles. In addition, students will be able to:
-
Demonstrate the ability to formulate and justify innovative plans/recommendations for achieving client’s project goals
-
Demonstrate the skills and abilities to critically evaluate their own personal learning and development whilst working on a consulting project
-
Apply professional communication skills to effectively present innovative solutions using diverse mediums and utilise interpersonal skills to collaborate with others in order to solve business problems
Design Capstone Units
For multimedia design students who have completed 200 credit points, you must complete your final year DDM30001 Motion Design Capstone Project, a 25-credit unit designed to illustrate the area scope and group dynamics in real-world contexts. Students develop professional level design outcomes in response to a Motion Design project brief and are required to work across a range of technologies, applying commercial design tools, and strategies.
