KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is deeply saddened by the passing of Irfan Sadique Samin, one of our international students from Bangladesh. We offer our sincerest condolences to the student’s grieving family and friends.
The University has been working closely with the family, police, and the High Commission throughout the past week. Police have closed their investigation and are not treating the incident as suspicious.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community is our highest priority. We are providing support to impacted students and staff, and continue to encourage all members of the University community to seek support through our counselling services.
We take all complaints concerning student welfare and safety – including racial discrimination and bullying – very seriously and are actively working with staff and students to fully investigate with the utmost urgency.
During this time, we urge members of our community to refrain from circulating unverified information, images, and speculation around the incident, to minimise the distress to all involved, especially the student’s family and friends.
We will continue to work closely with impacted students and staff, as well as the family, to provide support. We kindly request your understanding and compassion, not only for the University community but especially for the grieving family.
